Every few months I sit down with my friend Dawn to talk about what upcoming movies we want to see. Of course, it’s not quite as simple as that sounds. We’re big ol’ nerds, and also big movie fans, so I have taken to creating an entire spreadsheet for us. Release date, main actors, rating, and — of course — a link to a trailer fill out this spreadsheet so we can “do our homework” before we talk.

I’m not sure I’ve ever enjoyed homework so much.

This time around, Dawn and I both were a bit underwhelmed by this season’s theatrical offerings. Our spreadsheet wasn’t as full; our lists weren’t as long.

But then we started talking and realized that a) We still have more than a dozen movies on our collective lists that we really want to see and b) We can never manage to watch all the movies on our must-see lists anyway!

So, I’m happy to give you a small but solid list of movies coming out this spring (February through April) that look good enough to make up for the stress of finding a sitter.

Disclaimer: If you haven’t listened to Dawn and me talk about movies before (or read a preview post here before), you need to know that we do not do horror. Other than that, we give you a pretty good balance of movies. I have younger kids than Dawn, so I have the kiddie flicks covered. And she has a stronger stomach for more intense action, so she’s got you on that end.

Here’s what’s on our lists (links go to trailers so you can do your homework, too!):

Date Night Movies:

  • The Way Back (March 6) – Ben Affleck is a has-been basketball star, struggling with alcoholism and coaching kids. What could go wrong?
  • Spenser Confidential (March 6) – Mark Wahlberg plays a former cop and ex-con solving a crime. This one’s a Netflix movie.
  • A Quiet Place: Part II (March 20) – Emily Blunt is back, and I’m still a scaredy cat. So this is Dawn’s pick!
  • The Lovebirds (April 3) – Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae play a couple that stumbles onto a murder and has to solve the crime. Strangely, it looks hilarious!
  • No Time to Die (April 10) – Daniel Craig plays James Bond for the last time, so obviously this is the one movie Dawn and I will absolutely see this spring, no matter what!

Girls Night Movies:

  • To All the Boys 2: P.S. I Still Love (February 12) – Watch out, Peter Kavinski! Lara Jean has another suitor, and he also is adorable. Can’t wait for this Netflix sequel based on the Jenny Han book.
  • The Photograph (February 14) – Issa Rae and LaKeith Stanfield in a romance that’s perfect for Valentine’s Day (or Galentine’s Day if your guy isn’t so much into the romantic movies)!
  • Emma (February 21) – Yes, it’s another Jane Austen movie, but this one looks quirky and delightful!
  • My Spy (March 13) – I had this on my family list but Dawn thought it might be fun to watch with friends. Dave Bautista plays a CIA agent who gets mixed up with and then, I’m guessing, grows to love a precocious tween.

Family Night Movies:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog (February 14) – Yes, the video game character. He’s pairing up with James Marsden to defeat Jim Carrey’s most outrageous villain, if I’m understanding the trailer right.
  • The Call of the Wild (February 21) – This adventure starring Harrison Ford and a dog might be good for tweens and teens. Based on the Jack London book.
  • Onward (March 6) – Pixar, magical creatures in non-magical world, looks good if you’re 6 and 12 (which my kids are)
  • Mulan (March 27) – Live-action version of this Disney classic, and I can’t wait!
  • Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway (April 3) – This live-action and CGI sequel looks as ridiculous as the first one, so obviously my kids can’t wait to see it.
  • Trolls World Tour (April 17) – I’m not going to lie. I’m looking forward to seeing Poppy and Branch’s next adventure as much as my girls are.
  • The Secret Garden (April 17) – Based on the movie, starring Colin Firth and Julie Walters.

LISTEN to us talk about all these movies and more on The Couch Podcast (season 3, episode 2).
