Editing Services

Looking for someone to edit your e-book (or blog post or book proposal or about page or news release)? I’m a professional, experienced editor with an eye for details, a grasp of the big picture, and a respect for your unique voice.

Editing E-books, Book Proposals and More

Grammar is a piano I play by ear. All I know about grammar is its power.

This quote by Joan Didion is brilliant – both on the topic of grammar and in the correct usage of “its” (as opposed to the oft-abused “it’s”). Admittedly, I cannot play the piano by ear – and most of my editing is done within an arm’s reach of my trusty AP Stylebook, a subscription to the Chicago Manual of Style, and the latest version of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary – but I believe that knowing where to turn for answers [and playing by the book] is half the battle when it comes to tricky questions of grammar and style.

Currently, I am a contract proofreader for Harvest House Publishers. I’ve also spent the past two decades working in communications, writing and editing messages of all sorts. From fighting cancer to selling dog food, from brainstorming to final edits, from ad agency to freelancing, I’ve made it my goal to craft copy that is clear, consistent, and compelling. And now I’m here to do the same for you. You might say I’m putting aaa replica rolex daytona rolex calibre 4130 7750 mingzhu engine mens m116505 0015 automatic my perfectionism to work. I’ll simply say that I’m an editor for hire.

Only in grammar can you be more than perfect.

(Or so says William Safire.) It’s true that I’m working on giving up on perfect in every other area of my life, but editing is the one place I get to release my perfectionist tendencies and let them run free. Sitting at my table with red pen in hand, surrounded by printouts and pens with tabs open to Grammar Girl and Merriam-Webster on my laptop, is my happy place.

Yes, I’m a grammar geek who knows exactly where her spelling bee trophies are. But my obsession with good grammar and precise punctuation is a good thing for you. After all, as Arthur Plotnik said, “You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you. And we edit to let the fire show through the smoke.”

I’m here to help you polish your message so your readers internet can easily understand that fire that’s burning inside you. I’m here to help you look good. Nathaniel Hawthorne said, “Easy reading is damn hard writing.” Using my editing services will make the writing part a little bit easier.

I'd love to partner with you on your next ebook, proposal, or website!

Since I’m a verbal processor, not only is it important that I have an editor that excels in “written” skills, but also one who helps me think through the writing process and allows me the freedom to talk through potential road blocks in my written work. In her encouraging way, Mary does both of these well, and I highly recommend her for your next editorial project.

Mary Carver edited my manuscript clearly and concisely. She was extremely thorough and offered suggestions that made my book far better than it once was. I truly wouldn’t have been able to publish my book had it not been for Mary’s sharp eye and attention to detail. I will be coming back to Mary to edit my next one!

Working with Mary was great! She took the raw materials of my website copy and transformed it into a fantastic media kit, making our materials consistent and compelling while still maintaining my – and my company’s – voice. She did a great job, and I’m already planning to use her services again!

Mary is not only knowledgeable when it comes to grammar, usage and style questions, she also has the rare understanding of context – knowing when it is important to hold to the rules and when creative license prevails. Being familiar with Mary’s skill level and ability to adapt to new situations [as her former supervisor], I am completely comfortable recommending her for a range of projects – from copy-heavy, technical monographs to more succinct, creative marketing materials.
