Editing E-books, Book Proposals and More
Grammar is a piano I play by ear. All I know about grammar is its power.
This quote by Joan Didion is brilliant – both on the topic of grammar and in the correct usage of “its” (as opposed to the oft-abused “it’s”). Admittedly, I cannot play the piano by ear – and most of my editing is done within an arm’s reach of my trusty AP Stylebook, a subscription to the Chicago Manual of Style, and the latest version of the Merriam-Webster Dictionary – but I believe that knowing where to turn for answers [and playing by the book] is half the battle when it comes to tricky questions of grammar and style.
Currently, I am a contract proofreader for Harvest House Publishers. I’ve also spent the past two decades working in communications, writing and editing messages of all sorts. From fighting cancer to selling dog food, from brainstorming to final edits, from ad agency to freelancing, I’ve made it my goal to craft copy that is clear, consistent, and compelling. And now I’m here to do the same for you. You might say I’m putting my perfectionism to work. I’ll simply say that I’m an editor for hire.
Only in grammar can you be more than perfect.
(Or so says William Safire.) It’s true that I’m working on giving up on perfect in every other area of my life, but editing is the one place I get to release my perfectionist tendencies and let them run free. Sitting at my table with red pen in hand, surrounded by printouts and pens with tabs open to Grammar Girl and Merriam-Webster on my laptop, is my happy place.
Yes, I’m a grammar geek who knows exactly where her spelling bee trophies are. But my obsession with good grammar and precise punctuation is a good thing for you. After all, as Arthur Plotnik said, “You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you. And we edit to let the fire show through the smoke.”
I’m here to help you polish your message so your readers can easily understand that fire that’s burning inside you. I’m here to help you look good. Nathaniel Hawthorne said, “Easy reading is damn hard writing.” Using my editing services will make the writing part a little bit easier.
I'd love to partner with you on your next ebook, proposal, or website!
I’ve written and worked alongside Mary Carver in several different capacities for almost a decade. I appreciate that she’s both organized and creative, flexible and hardworking, fun to complete projects with and also serious about what she does. She’s the kind of partner you want for your words and the kind of person you want in your life.
Mary has a unique gift for writing in a conversational tone while using proper grammar and technique. She carries this gift over into her editing style, protecting the voice of the writer while helping to keep the message clear. Her suggestions helped enhance and clarify my thoughts, giving me confidence in my project.
Mary is easy to work with— encouraging, affordable, and efficient. Her feedback on my project was both kind and direct, which is a great combination when it comes to an editor.
As I prepared to self-publish my e-book, I knew I needed an editor’s expertise to help me take the book from good shape to great. Enter Mary Carver’s editing services. Not only did her eagle eyes perfect copy edits, but she offered tremendous insights related to the “big picture” idea and structure of my book. She asked detailed questions to help me be intentional with my copy choices. From her wealth of experience, Mary offered a well-rounded approach to editing my book. The success of my book’s release proves her services were money very well spent!
Since I’m a verbal processor, not only is it important that I have an editor that excels in “written” skills, but also one who helps me think through the writing process and allows me the freedom to talk through potential road blocks in my written work. In her encouraging way, Mary does both of these well, and I highly recommend her for your next editorial project.
Mary’s attention to detail was evident in the editing of my writing project as she pointed out not only errors but also areas that need clarification and suggestions for content improvement. Her dependable communication and timely handling of the project made working with her a true blessing.
Mary Carver edited my manuscript clearly and concisely. She was extremely thorough and offered suggestions that made my book far better than it once was. I truly wouldn’t have been able to publish my book had it not been for Mary’s sharp eye and attention to detail. I will be coming back to Mary to edit my next one!
Mary is a friend armed with excellent editing skills! She edited my book twice because it started as an ebook and later became an expanded paperback. She improved my grammar, clarified my story, and cheered me along in the process.
Mary is easy to work with, asks the right questions, and never made me feel stupid. I value that as a fellow editor!
Using Mary as an editor for my guest posts, e-books, and media kits has saved me tremendous embarrassment on several occasions. Mary does a thorough job of editing my materials without changing my voice. She is reliable, accurate and prompt with her work, and I recommend her to others often.
Mary was a fantastic editor for my e-book. Not only did she correct typos and grammar errors, she also suggested wording to help the flow of the book. She worked quickly and exceeded my expectations!
Working with Mary was great! She took the raw materials of my website copy and transformed it into a fantastic media kit, making our materials consistent and compelling while still maintaining my – and my company’s – voice. She did a great job, and I’m already planning to use her services again!
Mary is not only knowledgeable when it comes to grammar, usage and style questions, she also has the rare understanding of context – knowing when it is important to hold to the rules and when creative license prevails. Being familiar with Mary’s skill level and ability to adapt to new situations [as her former supervisor], I am completely comfortable recommending her for a range of projects – from copy-heavy, technical monographs to more succinct, creative marketing materials.
