Do you ever find yourself watching a TV show and loving it – except for that one character? Have you ever wished a certain character would meet an untimely demise, as they say?
But what if he could change? What if she promises it will be different this time? What if they really mean it? Today’s Top 10 Tuesday is about TV characters who started out driving me up the wall . . . but ended up being my favorites (or at least bearable).

Fun list! I don’t watch most of these shows but I agree with you about Andy Bernard and the Ugly Betty pair.
I didn’t like Angie Harmon when she was an ADA on Law & Order until I started watching the reruns (and she’s so much better than the women who came after her)– I thought she was a terrible actress, and now I’m a big fan since that Women’s Murder CLub show and now Rizzoli and Isles.
I love the Women’s Murder Club books and liked the TV show, too – but I think Rizzoli & Isles is a little too weird for me!
I don’t watch any of those shows. Like for real – none. But I totally know what you mean about changing your opinion on a character … it’s kind of fun when the writers can make you do that!
Oh, I’m so sad for you, missing out on these great shows!!
Wow. How is it that you can, like, come up with 10 of ANYTHING?!? I usually get to 7 and then go “aw, screw it…my list sucks.” :) You’re so good at lists…
It’s my OCD coming out.
Oh my- besides Greys/BN/Monk (don’t watch those) these guys are some of my all time favorite characters! I have so many Gob quotes on hand at any time. Andy Bernard took about 5 episodes before I loved him. Barney, Tracey, Marc and Amanda, and Sheldon are what made me fall in love with those shows. I must like the quirky ones :) Bazinga!!!!
haha! I almost started my title with “Bazinga”!
LOVE this list! Andy Bernard – I totally agree. Hated him for the longest, but now every single thing he does cracks us up! His singing . . . I’m giggling now just thinking about it.
And Tracy Jordan? CRACKS ME UP! There are so many of his lines that hubby and I can use at any given moment to make the each other laugh. And the posters on the wall in his dressing room? Who Dat Ninja? Hardee-har-har-har!
Honestly, this is one of the reasons why it drives me crazy when a network cans a show after just a few episodes. The reality is that you, as the viewer, sometimes need time to “get to know” the characters.
Clearly the networks need to listen to you. :)
I love Tracy (Morgan) Jordan…while most of what he does is completely inappropriate, I want to be his friend and laugh at him all day long. Sometimes what determines my likability for a character is whether or not they are quotable. Tracy Jordan? Quotable. Michael Scott? Quotable. The list goes on.
Ohhh, Nikki, great point. The crazy characters ARE way more quotable!
Yeah, Tracy Jordan is so funny!
He’s in the movie Cop Out, it was really funny!
I’ve only seen a few of these shows,(Burn Notice, Monk,The Office.)
Great list. Loved it!
My husband just watched that movie and said it was stupid but funny!
Fully tracking with you on Addison and Morgan.
I Sawyer and Jin at the beginning of LOST, but by the end, they were two of my favorites. Michael went the opposite direction. The “single dad” thing had you empathizing with him in the beginning, and then gradually you realized he’s kind of just an annoying, self-centered jerk.
Sort of on the fence about whether Sue Sylvester from GLEE fits this category. I think the point of her character from the beginning was that she was so darn enjoyable to hate. With Sue, it’s not so much she’s won you over as you love to hate her, or hate to love her, and the love and hate are pretty much always in perfect equilibrium.
Great point about Sue Sylvester. The writers may be over the top on a lot of other parts of Glee, but they’ve kept a good balance with her character.
You watch waaaaayyyy too much TV!!
PS – Can I come live with you and your TV?
PPS – I can cook.
PPPS – And babysit.
Really? I don’t know about that. :)
Hmmm…can cook AND babysit???
I love Gob’s chicken dance!!!
Haha! Me, too!
A character from Harry Potter who shall remain nameless fits this for me. But that’s from a book, so I dunno if it fits. I can’t think of any others on TV right now…
I agree about Andy though. But I’m not sure about Tracy Morgan (I still find him really annoying) and I never did like Gob too much (or his brother Buster — what an annoying family! Yes, I know that was the point). Oh, and you know who never grew on me and I just couldn’t stand? Steve Erkel (or however you spell it, from Family Matters). Ugh, he was annoying!! Man, I really can’t think of any I changed my mind about though! I agree with whoever else asked how on earth you come up with all these top 10 lists! :P
Well, once you make up your mind, there’s no going back, I guess! But yes, Urkel was always annoying.
I hated Michelle on Full House from the moment that character started talking. The acting- or lack thereof- was PAINFUL.
I totally agree with you about Morgan on Chuck- he’s completely endearing now. And of course when I hear The Final Countdown, I can’t think of anyone else but Gob!
Ugh. Good point about Full House. I can’t stand her either!
OK I am really lame because I only know a couple of these shows, let along characters. But I do agree with you on Barney – I have a horrible crush on Jason Segal and watch How I Met Your Mother for that reason, and Doogie Howser totally grew on me after a while.
You aren’t lame at all! I’M the one who watches too much TV! ;)
Let’s see I know, Chuck, The Office, Arrested Development, 30 Rock, and Monk. I would agree with you on all of them.
I think the “Characters” on all the Real Housewives are fabulous because I love to be annoyed by their amazing behavior. At first I can’t believe them and then I enjoy their stupidity. And, yes, it is a super trashy show, but I don’t usually sit around watching Masterpiece Theatre, so I’ll stick with women that think everyone wants to be them when we really, truly don’t.
Ha! Sarah, I love that. Not the show, really. Just your admission of watching and enjoying it. ;)
yeah it was pretty stupid, it was good though. It was pretty much so dumb it was funny,
Ya know?
