Well, this has certainly been an interesting process. On Friday – in the middle of a great conversation about feminism, of course – my move from Blogger to WordPress began.
Deanna worked all weekend, moving my posts and buttons and header (and then a different header…and then another different header) over. Comments were lost, buttons were created, posts disappeared and subscribers may or may not have been unsubscribed.
Tears may have been shed.
And then, when Deanna realized that half of our frustration (okay, mainly HERS, as she was the one working the magic behind the curtain) was due to a simple fact I failed to reveal.
Remember how some of you didn’t like Disqus? Um, yeah. Now Deanna and I don’t like them either. Because it was my use of Disqus that made my precious, precious comments go POOF!
Flash forward to Monday and a recipe post that is no more. Finally, Deanna and I sat down (via Skype) and walked through the whole setup. She schooled me in the basics of WordPress, and I thanked her profusely for putting up with my demands and confusion and general difficult-ness.
And now? Well, the boxes are in the house, but I haven’t unpacked everything just yet. My plan is to unpack everything this week, hang up a few photos and put out some fresh flowers. That way, next week, we can have a housewarming party!
That’s right. To reward you for hanging with me through this not-so-simple transition, I’m throwing a party! We’ll have music and food and prizes!
Okay, maybe no music or food. But definitely prizes.
What’s been going on in YOUR world? And what do you think of my new digs so far?

I like your new digs. But I'm also not a fan of Disqus. I can't comment from my phone, which makes me sad.
Huh. I didn’t know that about the phone. Probably because I don’t have an iPhone. :)
Agreed about Disqus. I love threaded comments, but I have yet to find a comment system that I can't live without.
I like your new digs, though, and I admire your bravery in packing up and moving to WordPress. Seems several of my buddies did that this weekend.
Brave? Maybe. Or dumb. I had no idea how much time I’d take on this “little” move! :)
Oh, I'm sure I will have food here. ;) Looking forward to everything getting up and running. But I'm very sorry for your loss of comments. :( That's a lot of comments… and reminds me of the Onion video about the crash of the entire internet and how it really impacted the blog world. (Have you seen that video? It's High-larious — that's a Mary-ism, isn't it?;)
I haven’t seen that video. You should send me the link!
Hmm, so you're still using Disqus; does this mean that when the new blog is all set to go, you won't be? So will these comments be gone too then? No big deal; I'll still be coming back, of course. :) I was just curious. Love ya! >:D<
Thanks! And sorry that Disqus is still here. I thought it was gone. This would be part of the unpacking I'm still doing, I guess!
I might not have been so brave if I'd known…! :)
Congratulations! I wondered where you've been! :-) Glad you're back and that your blog is up and running!
Thanks, Lisa!
Thanks, Chelley. I didn't realize I WAS still using Disqus! Ha! (Working on getting rid of it now…)
I would have been in tears too! Hope that once the dust settles you will be happy in your new home :)
Thank you, Veronica! They’re all saved in Disqus, so I suppose if I want to look at them (like old pictures, you know), I can. :)
I’m glad that my husband made me start off in Word Press to begin with. My sister in law had the heartache of switching a few months ago. Word Press is awesome, though, so welcome to the club :)
I’m really getting to understand – and love – it. Smart move starting out here!
Looks great, Mary!
Thanks, PJ!
Okay, at first the white background didn’t load on my screen and I was thinking that I was going to tell you that it was WAY DIFFICULT to read, but turns out it was just taking some time to load. That being said, you’re good. Can’t wait for prizes :)
It seems to load kind of slowly. I need to work on that…
The place looks great. One comment: the page load is long and what comes up first is a totally red background that hangs out by itself for a few seconds before everything else catches up. I thought at first there was a problem with the page.
I really love the social networking widget on the posts – can you tell me which one you’re using??
Grrr. I’ve noticed that and don’t know how to fix it. I’ve got it on my list to figure out. Thank you for the honest feedback – and for hanging with me until I get it fixed!
The plugin is Sexy Bookmarks!
Hey Mary, I left this comment for you on my post but didn’t know if you’d see it (you know, since I don’t have threaded comments!).
If you’re really interested in becoming a Blessings Unlimited consultant, now is a good time. You can get started for only $159, which gets you over $400 in merchandise plus enough paper products (invitations, catalogs, etc.) for 4 Gahterings. Our brand new catalog, with new merchandise, is coming out on September 1, so there will be lots of pretty new stuff available!
Plus, of course, if you go to my website and sign up under me, I get credit for you! :)
If you have any questions, let me know. I can’t access my personal email from work, which is why I’m leaving you a comment rather than emailing, but I’m happy to answer any questions you have… and I swear I won’t bug you about this again, so if you aren’t interested, no big deal!
Chrissy, I would love to, but I have some major changes coming up already, and I think I’d better not add anything else to my list/calendar. BUT, if I decide to do it in the future, I will absolutely sign up through you!! Thank you for the information!
I wondered what happened to you last week! I had been following the feminism conversation with with interest, so I’m sad to see so much of it disappear! But that’s ok. :) I will have to add your new feed to my google reader, since I’m also one of the ones who lost you there.
I also have to confess, I don’t know enough about the technological side of blogging to understand why some people prefer wordpress to blogger – (out of my apparent ignorance) I’ve been using blogger for three years and have been reasonably happy with it. But then again I’ve rarely seen anyone actually say WHY wordpress is better, they just say it is. Just about everything I’ve found on the internet about it is outdated (e.g., wordpress allows pages and blogger doesn’t, except blogger does now.) So I’d be curious to know your thoughts about the difference. Anyway, blah blah, 45 minutes later, welcome back. :)
I’m definitely going to have to write a post about Blogger vs. WordPress. But first, I’d better figure it out myself. :)
Thanks for resubscribing!!
LOVE the new digs! I’ve been slowly figuring out a plan for my move to wordpress (and dreading it) so I’m anxious to hear your hints and tips about it!
Thank you, Michelle! I hope to have some tips up soon!!
