Last year, I wrote about the books I planned to read during the fall and winter months. Looking back, it seems I read about two-thirds of them.
What? Sometimes I just can’t get into a Karen Kingsbury mood.
Fall began several weeks ago, and so did the Fall Into Reading carnival at Callapidder Days. But as I may have mentioned a time or twenty, life has been a little crazy lately. (I’ll be linking up late!)
Now that I’m full into stay-at-home mode, though, I’m taking full advantage of my extra time. No, I’m not watching soap operas and eating Oreos. But I am spending a little more time reading for fun.
With that good news in mind, here are a few books I’ll be reading this fall (and a few I’ve already read).
Books I’ve Already Read:
- So Not Happening and I’m So Sure by Jenny B. Jones (Super cute, although the heroine isn’t my favorite)
- Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie (Perfect if you like romance and ghosts. Not so much if you don’t. Umm…I liked it!)
- Licensed for Trouble by Susan May Warren (I love this series! A review on the back said it’s the CBA version of Stephanie Plum, and she’s right! I have a feeling the series is over now, but I want more!)
Books I’m Going to Review:
- Bittersweet: Thoughts on Change, Grace, and Learning the Hard Way by Shauna Niequist
- Snow Day by Billy Coffey
- One in a Million: Journey to Your Promised Land by Priscilla Shirer
- Reluctant Entertainer: The Every Woman’s Guide to Simple and Gracious Hospitality by Sandy Coughlin
Books Currently on My Bedside Table:
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Book 2)
- So Over My Head by Jenny B. Jones
- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Schaffer (This has been recommended to me about a trillion times. I’ll let you know if it lives up to my expectations!)
- The Mailbox by Marybeth Whalen
- Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart by Beth Pattillo
Books {that I love} I’m Finally Going to Finish:
- Crazy Love by Francis Chan
- Plan B by Pete Wilson
- Same Kind of Different as Me
- The Me I want to Be by John Ortberg
Books I’m Planning to Read as Soon as I Get My Hands on Them:
- Pursuit of Justice by DiAnn Mills
- Fatal Judgment by Irene Hannon
- The Inner Circle by Brad Meltzer
- Hell’s Corner by David Baldacci
- Wicked Appetite by Janet Evanovich
- Radical by David Platt
E-Books I Need to Read and Think You’ll Like, Too:
- Once a Month Mom Holiday 2010 eCookbook (Have my entire holiday meal ready before guests ever arrive? Yes, please!)
- Simple Blogging: Less Computer Time. Better Blogging. (I am in major need of less computer time. Can’t wait to check this out!)
- Real Food on a Real Budget: Eating Healthy for Less (Healthy? For less? I can’t wait to read this book by my Savvy Blogging Summit roomie!)
What are you reading this fall? Do you have any books I should add to the list?

I finally read Guernsey Society recently and it really was excellent!!
I am bad about reading nonfiction, but right now I am reading Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours and Secrets of the Baby Whisperer!
You’ll have to let me know what you think about the Making Children Mind. Because the Lord knows I could use some help in that department!
You will love the Geurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. That’s one I would like to read again.
Right now I’m reading “Little Bee” for the second time. It’s a book that will haunt you for a long, long time. Our book club is reading it for November, so I was glad to have a chance to read it again.
Little Bee? I don’t know if I’ve heard of that one. Going to look it up now…
I love your list! I’m always on the look out for new books to read. I’ll definitely be looking into the Stephanie Plum-like series you read. Good luck on your list!
There are three books in the PJ Sugar (by Susan May Warren) series. I hope you like them! (And I hope she writes more!)
Naturally, I am working through the books on my bedside table (and in the closet and bookshelf and scattered throughout the house) as well! You’ll love Guernsey…I might have been one of the ones to recommend it. I just finished Life of Pi which I loved. Also finished the incredible Prodigal God, by Tim Keller. Getting on the library list for Jan Karon’s new one: In the Company of Others. If only I had more time to read!! :)
I’ve heard The Life of Pi is great from several people. It’s on my to-read list. If only you had a few hours each week to read… ;)
These look great…thanks for the ideas.
Janet Evanovich ROCKS!!!!
I read the Host by Stephanie Myers.. It took a few chapters for me to get into it, but once I did, I LOVED it!!!
Right now I’m reading The Redemtion Series by Karn Kingsbury. It’s a Christian series and it gets a little “preachy” at times, but it’s really good. It’s about the Baxter family and you get really attached to the family. I’m on the 3rd book of that series…
I loved the Redemption series by Karen Kingsbury. (And there are two additional series after those five.) But they are HARD reads because they’re so emotional! I would be so anxious to get the next one…and then I’d sit on it for a while, working up the nerve to dive into another emotionally draining journey!
I highly recommend having an entire box of tissues for the end of Same Kind of Different As Me. Great book but man did it turn me into a soppy mess.
I have heard that. And I’m such a crier that I’m sure I’ll be the same way!
I’m reading Bittersweet right now and absolutely savoring it. It is wonderful! Radical is kicking my butt in a big way. In between fiction books right now but planning to start South of Broad (Conroy) on the plane tonight!
I am savoring Bittersweet, too. That is the PERFECT way to describe it.
Thanks for the ideas. I read “Same kind of Different ” and really enjoyed it.
I haven’t heard a single person who didn’t like it. I’m looking forward to joining the ranks of “read it, loved it!”
Fantastic list! I stole a couple for my reading list. Same Different Kind of Me is fantastic and I have also purchased Plan B and Radical, but haven’t dug in yet.
Are you on http://www.goodreads.com/?
I have a GoodReads account but don’t do any networking on there. It’s lame, but I just can’t muster the energy for yet another site! :)
One of the most wonderful and beautiful works of fiction I’ve ever read is “Gilead” by Marilynne Robinson. This book is an exquisite look into the life of a family – very internal and personal. It stayed with me for months afterwards… in fact, it may be time for me to read it again!
As for non-fiction, my hands-down favorite is “Captivating” by John and Stasi Eldridge. It’s a book about God’s heart for women, and literally changed my spiritual life.
Interesting. I’ve never heard of Gilead. I’ll have to look it up. I have heard of Captivating, and it seems like women either LOVE it … or don’t. :)
PIck up “Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart” first of your bedside table. I really enjoyed it! I saw Jennifer Crusie’s new book last night. I don’t mind ghosts. But I don’t like reading scary things as I read before bed. Was it scary? Maybe I’ll pick it up and give it a try. Thanks for sharing your list with us!
I probably will. It’s technically at the library waiting to be picked up, but I’m going to get it tomorrow! I didn’t think the Crusie book was scary. Maybe a little bit freaky at the end, but I’m a big chicken and read it alone at night – and was fine.
“Same Kind of Different As Me” is a wonderful (albeit totally tear-jerking) book. I found myself sobbing and wiping my eyes so that I could see the words on the page.
Good luck with your reading!

I’m a crier, so I’ll be prepared with a box of kleenex!
Great list! I didn’t know something like this existed. I’m getting a post like this together myself now too. Hope to get it up later this week. Thanks so much for sharing! :)
Oh and hey, how do you do those pics that are 4-wide like that… is it a Photoshop thing?
Ooh, fun! I can’t wait to see your list! I do the collages in Picasa, which you can download for free. I don’t have Photoshop. :)
I put the first on hold at my library. I’m excited to get one and try it out!
I finally got my post up with my list!!! Yay! :)
